![]() ![]() ![]() It’s mind boggling to think that the whole game takes place all in one mansion (and one little area next to it, but who’s counting?). Armed with limited ammo, herb-like survival items, and a sense of dread it was the player’s mission to get to the bottom of the ten (ish) hour long mystery. It followed one of two (player’s choice) government operatives as they made their way through a zombie invested mansion to find out what happened to their missing comrades. Resident Evil originally released on March 22nd, 1996 on the Playstation. Taking the once claustrophobic camera angles and replacing them with more open environments redefined what was scary in the horror gaming genre for years to come.Īnd while it’s easy to sit here and count the ways the series innovated its self over the years (even after the stumble that was 5 and 6, yes I’m still mad), the true magnificence of it comes from where it started. Four’s list of accomplishments are even longer, as it paved the way for a new presentation in the series. Three’s inclusion of an omnipresent hulk-like zombie named Nemesis gave way to branching paths and a mind bending layer of unpredictability that kept players on their toes. ![]() There’s no franchise that can even come close to making me wince….Ĭertain iterations in the series aside (I’m looking at you 5 and 6), Resident Evil is always finding a new way to terrify its fans. I’ve even wandered through those budget “horror” games on steam (seriously download The Hatman: Shadow Ward, it’s bad, but hilariously so with friends). I’ve traversed around in Outlast’s abandoned mental wards and I’ve snuck around crypts (and poorly executed industrial age buildings) in Amnesia’s twisted world. When it comes to the horror genre in video games, I’m a seasoned veteran. ![]()
